SARS 2025 Update: Exempt Dividends Now Easier to Declare - But Still Require Expert Handling
The 2025 tax season has brought an important update for South African taxpayers: SARS has introduced two new source codes to simplify the declaration of exempt dividends on your ITR12 income tax return.
This change is a welcome step toward more accurate, streamlined tax compliance - but it also highlights why working with a registered tax practitioner is more important than ever.
New Dividend Source Codes on the ITR12
As of the 2025 filing season, you’ll now find two distinct codes under the non-taxable income section of your ITR12:
-
4306 – Exempt Local Dividends
For qualifying dividends from listed South African companies, retirement annuities, or collective investment schemes. -
4307 – Exempt Foreign Dividends
For dividend income earned abroad that qualifies for full or partial exemption under Section 10B of the Income Tax Act. This includes exemptions based on your shareholding percentage or the existence of a tax treaty between countries.
While these dividends may be exempt from normal income tax, dividends tax (20%) may still apply - unless the recipient is an approved exempt party, such as a South African company or regulated retirement fund.
Why Correct Declaration Still Matters
Although exempt dividends are not taxed as income, failure to declare them correctly can trigger SARS reviews or lead to under-declaration penalties. It’s crucial to:
-
Select the correct source code (4306 or 4307)
-
Provide supporting documents, such as IT3(b) certificates or tax treaty evidence
-
Understand the difference between exemption from income tax and the separate dividends tax liability
Vectigal Accounting: Tax Filing Services That Reduce Risk
As part of our dividend income support services, we:
✔️ Ensure local and foreign dividend exemptions are reported correctly
✔️ Review and upload documentation to support your SARS declaration
✔️ Apply foreign tax credits or exemptions under Section 6quat or 10B, where applicable
✔️ Assist with SARS queries or verifications related to your ITR12
✔️ Handle tax returns for sole proprietors, trusts, and high-income earners who often face complex investment reporting
Common Scenarios We Help With:
- “How do I declare exempt dividends from my unit trust?”
-
“I received a dividend from a UK company - how do I avoid double taxation?”
-
“My ITR12 was flagged by SARS for incorrect dividend reporting - what now?”
With ongoing changes in SARS systems and codes, filing your own tax return isn’t always as simple as it seems - especially when foreign income, investments, or exemptions are involved.
